The Gopher Tortoise is a primary consumer. It obtains energy from the foods that it eats such as, low growing plants like grass, legumes , and fruits. This tortoise lives in the self dug burrows underground. The Gopher Tortoise is an endangered species. This organism has various adaptations. It is able to protect itself from other predators such as racoons, foxes, skunks, and armadillos by using its hard shell. Additionally, the Gopher Tortoise uses its sharp nails to dig up a habitat for them to live in. Lastly, its dark tan color helps it camouflage in its environment. Gopher tortoises are a very interesting species. They live up to 100 years and has a strong sense of smell for a nearby predator. They can also drink rain water to get into their burrow.
